Yerba Maté is a herbal tea, similar to black tea without milk or green tea. Sometimes it’s called argentina tea or Argentinian tea, but it all refers to the same thing.
Yerba Maté is made by drying and steeping the leaves from the yerba mate plant, which is native to South America. If you've heard about yerba mate though a podcast or seen your favourite football players drinking it, you're not alone. Mate is growing in popularity as one of the best hot drinks and coffee alternatives out there. Not to mention the fact that it's delicious.
There are a few different ways to enjoy mate these days, ranging from the traditional gourd-drinking method to more modern drinking vessels. Drinking yerba mate the traditional way involves preparing your gourd, putting the tea leaves inside, then filling it with hot water. Not boiling! Aim for 70-80 degrees Celsius. There's nothing wrong with enjoying yerba mate like a cup of green tea either, and brewing it in a teapot. Just remember to use clean, fresh water, filtered if you can. The answer is yes and no. Yerba mate extract does have many health benefits, such as containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It also contains caffeine as much as coffee does in many cases. This makes it an ideal choice for people who are looking for an energy boost but don’t want to drink coffee.
However, if you are looking for the more intense energy boost that higher caffeine levels bring, then coffee may be the better choice for you. With a cup of yerba mate containing about as much caffeine as a shot of espresso, its a lot easier to brew coffee with higher caffeine levels.
Yerba mate has been shown to have a number of beneficial effects on health, but like all things, it can also have some negative side effects. Because yerba mate is mildly-caffeinated, those sensitive to caffeine may have trouble sleeping if they drink maté before going to bed. Outside of that, there are no notable side effects.
We certainly do! You can see our complete range of organic yerba mate tea online.
